I am from New Haven, CT, enjoy leisure time on the beach, and eating New Haven pizza and seafood. I strive to perform and practice my passion for a living. I love to play the cello, embroider, travel, and watch The Office. I hope to spread awareness, cheer, and ease through my blog posts.

MM in Piano Performance and Literature Hello! My name is Chin-Hsuan Cheng, and you are very welcome to call me Sharon. I’m originally from Taiwan and I’m currently a second-year masters student in piano performance and literature. Besides solo piano pieces, I play chamber music and collaborate with other musicians. From 2021 to 2022, I also served as the pianist in the UI wind orchestra. I used to play the cello as my minor instrument. In my free time, I enjoy swimming. BA in Music + Psychology Hello! I'm Jaelyn. I'm a first-year undergraduate from Edwardsville, Illinois, and I’m majoring in Music+ Psychology. I primarily play the trumpet, but I also played violin for seven years. I love all things music, but I also enjoy other creative fields like painting, drawing and writing. I can't wait to share my experiences with all of you, and I hope my stories will inspire others to participate in the arts.

I’m originally from Wisconsin and I received my Bachelor's degree at UW-Madison (fun fact; Wisconsin is the cheese state but I really don’t like cheese that much). Music Admissions Graduate Assistant Class of 2024 DMA in Saxophone Performance and Literature Born and raised in south Louisiana, I am a DMA student studying Saxophone Performance and Literature. I completed my undergraduate degree in saxophone performance at Louisiana State University and my MM in Saxophone Performance and Literature here at UIUC! Additionally, I completed the Music Entrepreneurship Certificate while acting as an intern for the Lyric Theatre @ Illinois. Now, I am excited to continue my role as a Graduate Assistant in Music Admissions!

Music Admissions Graduate Assistant Class of 2023 DMA in Jazz Piano Performance Joy Yang is a dynamic pianist and thereminist anchored in classical music, now focusing on jazz, free improvisation, and interdisciplinary performance. She is a performer-composer and educator. Yang leads her own jazz trio, and collaborates with visual artists, video projection mappers, sound designers, dancers, choreographers, scientists and poets. Joy improvises telematically with the international Ethernet Orchestra and Female Laptop Orchestra. Born in South Africa to Chinese parents, Joy spent most of her life in Sydney, Australia before moving to the USA to pursue her graduate studies. Joy is completing her DMA in Jazz Performance (cognate in Piano Performance and Literature) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her first CD release was with Kuroshio in 2020, under Asian Improv Records.

Dr. Angela Tammen
Admissions and Blog Director
DMA, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Angela Tammen is the Admissions Director for the School of Music. In this role, she oversees music admissions and recruitment, music enrollment, and merit-based financial aid. Dr. Tammen has been instrumental in developing a strategic recruitment and enrollment plan at the School of Music, and she has also distinguished herself as a leader in the music admissions field, presenting topics on recruitment, scholarships, and transfer applications at national music and performing arts conferences. Dr. Tammen began her administrative career at the University of Illinois with Illinois Summer Youth Music (ISYM) and she is committed to fostering arts advocacy through ISYM and the other public engagement programs at the School of Music.
